ANALYSIS: Insider Threat Greater Than Cyberterrorism
Threat
Major US Think Tanks Now Concur With ContingenZ
Experts
Los Angeles, CA, June 5, 2003 – Experts from Gartner Inc.
and from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) now concur
with previously published ContingenZ Corporation analyses that the threat of
Cyberterrorism is overshadowed by the threat posed by company insiders.
According to CSIS director James Lewis, the threat of
cyberterrorism may be overstated, but the threat of less organized attacks may
be understated, thereby echoing the ContingenZ analysis published earlier this
year and available on the ContingenZ web site at http://www.contingenz.com/infocenter.htm.
Michael Miora, CISSP, ContingenZ Corporation CEO, says that
the company is gratified that respected and reputable organizations like Gartner
and CSIS have come to embrace the conclusions previously reached by ContingenZ
experts who learn from and provide services on the ground to major international
corporations.
“The importance of these conclusions is in their application to the Incident
Management planning processes of large and small companies. They lead us to a
path where we know we must concentrate on mitigating a blend of threats rather
than focusing too closely on the much discussed cyberterrorism threat,”
explains Miora.
The IDG News Service reports that while the U.S. has counted nearly 2,000
physical terrorism attacks in the last decade, there have been no major
cyberterrorism attacks during that time. It is also true that during that same
period, many outages occurred due to inside employee attacks, some aimed at
causing malicious damage and others used to conceal other security breaches.
Concludes Miora, “The facts are plain to see: Cyberterrorism is a threat we
need to face, but we must meet that threat in its proper context and together
with other threats.”
