ANALYSIS: Risk of Cyber-Terror Overstated
Basic Planning Mitigates Risks with Good ROI
Los Angeles, CA, March 7, 2003 – According to ContingenZ Corporation, the often-discussed risk of cyber-terrorism is overstated and can be mitigated with good incident management planning. Dr. Dorothy E. Denning, Director of the Georgetown Institute for Information Assurance at Georgetown University and an acclaimed expert, points to the recent “Digital Pearl Harbor” war game conducted by the U.S. Naval War College, which simulated a massive cyber-attack on US networks and demonstrated that assailants would need $200 million, intelligence information and years of preparation time to accomplish significant disruptions.
Richard Forno, author of a book on information warfare and former chief security officer at Network Solutions, a computer services company says, “While there is much fear, uncertainty and doubt associated with the term, I posit that cyber-terrorism is really nothing more than a paper tiger.”
Experts agree that though a widespread and massive attack could cause serious damage, the possibility of such an attack is small and growing smaller as time goes on. According to Michael Miora, Founder and President of ContingenZ Corporation
(www.contingenz.com), “These conclusions show that it is now possible for businesses to mitigate their risk of embarrassment or worse by performing simple planning with a good ROI [Return on Investment] factor.”
Miora continues, “If there is an attack, you don’t want to be the company that goes down because then you will be the headline. The media and public attention will focus on a disruption, even if it is a minor one.” Good incident management planning reduces that risk to a manageable level.
